Hardwood
Hardwoods come from broad leaved, mostly deciduous trees with the dominant features separating them from softwoods being the presence of pores.
Hardwood ranges from the extremely hard such as Ebony to the soft and lightweight species such as Balsa.
The slower rate of growth contributes to a denser structure of hardwood, which generally means a more durable product when used in construction. Hardwoods are also typically more resistant to decay than softwoods when used in exterior work.
Our hardwood department at Five Oaks Normans is dedicated to supplying the most popular and sustainable species of hardwood for use in high quality joinery and construction.
Boards
From Commercial Building and Five Oaks, Normans supply an extensive range of boards for use in the building industry, including plywood, MDF and OSB. We also supply the interlocking Respatex brand of finished wall panels, which can be used directly in finished shower interiors.
Plywood is probably the most widely available manufactured board material for use in general construction. Made by bonding together a number of thin veneers of softwood or hardwood, plywood has a variety of uses and application.
Exterior grade plywood, when treated, can be used for cladding material and outdoor constructions such as sheds. Internal plywood can be used for wall panelling and flooring, and Normans also supply marine grade plywood which stand up to immersion in water.

Softwood

Softwood is a generic term used in the timber industry for wood that comes from conifer trees. The most commonly cultivated sources of softwood are pines, spruces and firs but also include larch, hemlock, yew and cedar.

Mill
Whether for hardwood or softwood, we offer extensive milling facilities at our Five Oaks depot.
Our services include cutting standard timber to size, as well as cutting to rounded edges and bespoke sizes and specifications. The mill also produces mouldings to specifications as well as manufacturing cutters for mouldings.
So whatever shape or size you need your timber, Normans dedicated milling service at Five Oaks is a cut above the rest.
Doors
A stylish entrance makes for the right first impression to any home. Normans stock a wide range of exterior and interior doors to match the style and look of any building.
Working with leading manufacturers such as JB Kind and Premdor, Normans offer an extensive selection of hardwood and softwood doors in a variety of styles, finishes and colours. We also supply the complete door set package including frames, hinges and locks.
From our Five Oaks and Commercial Building premises, we supply specialized doors to meet the rigorous demands of the local construction industry. These include disabled access doors, fire doors and fire door blanks. We supply intumescent strips and inserts to complement our range of fire doors.
